Not available in the current data – Ubuntu Software Center

I just install the new Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop and i was very happy. I am especially pleased with the new look of the Ubuntu Desktop and of the Ubuntu Netbook Remix releases.

One thing thing that has been an issue, is that on using the new Ubuntu Software Center, I get the following error messages:

Not available in the current data
and
Not available for your hardware architecture

So in case anyone else is running into this try running:
sudo apt-get update
in a terminal.

From the man page:
“update is used to resynchronize the package index files from their sources.”

After that everything worked fine.

What this programs does:

Cyber Security is a scareware program from the same family as Total Security . This rogue is promoted through the use of malware as well as fake online anti-malware scanners. When installed via Trojans, it will be installed on to your computer without your permission. When promoted via the web, you will see a pop-up that states that your computer is infected and that you should download and install Cyber Security to protect your computer. When the program is installed it will be configured to start automatically when you start Windows and perform a scan of your computer. When the scan has finished, Cyber Security will state that there are numerous infections on your computer, but will state it cannot remove anything unless you first purchase the program. This method of showing fake scan results is just a method where the developers of Cyber Security are trying to trick you into thinking that your computer has a security problem in the hopes that you will then purchase the program. As the only security problem on the computer is Cyber Security, you should not purchase this program.

Chad Hurley, chief executive and co-founder of YouTube, marked today’s three-year anniversary of Google’s acquisition with a blog post that proclaimed the popular video site is “serving well over a billion views a day” globally.

“This is great moment in our short history and we owe it all to you,” he said.

YouTube says that about 70 percent of its traffic originates overseas, with the balance coming from within the United States.

ComScore Inc. reported that U.S. users watched about 10 billion videos over Google — 99 percent on YouTube — in August. Microsoft and Viacom sites ranked a distance second and third place, respectively, with 546,547 and 539,471 videos views.

Hurley said the company was and remains committed to three core principles:

1) Videos should load and play back quickly

2) Short clips are voraciously consumed and perfect for watching a wide variety of content

3) Content creation isn’t our business; it’s yours.

He added:

We’re working hard to keep up with the fast pace of technology to bring you everything you would expect from the world’s largest video site — better quality; a full spectrum of choices and tools for users content partners, and advertisers; and ways to make the YouTube experience your own anywhere anytime.

YouTube is celebrating the third anniversary of its acquisition by Google by showing off an awful lot of O’s. The little video site that could announced on Friday it was now streaming a full billion video views a day — the majority of which, I have to assume, consist of cats playing music and teens doing awkward dances.

Still, a billion views a day is nothing to say “Numa Numa” over. YouTube has come a long way in a short time — evolving much, you might say, like the dance moves shown in its most viewed video of all time.

Q. How do I change ip address in Linux?

A. There are different ways to change IP address in Linux
(a) Command Line tools

(b) Modify configuration files

(c) Use GUI tools

Task: Display current IP address and setting for network interface called eth0

Use ifconfig command:
# ifconfig eth0

Task: Change IP address

You can change ip address using ifconfig command itself. To set IP address 192.168.1.5, enter command:
# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.5 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
# ifconfig eth0


To make permanent changes to IP address you need to edit configuration file according to your Linux distribution.
